LOOKING FOR SUPPORT?

For the first many years of my journey as a mom of determined and uniquely needed kids, I found and learned from every resource I could find. In fact, we were lucky enough to have the same PT for 8 years, behavioral therapist for 7 years, and tutor for over 6 years. Dentists, primary care, and many specialists were also stable and reliable — we spent 8-10 great years with the same babysitters and care providers as well.

Over the course of a year or so, some people went home to have babies, some moved away and then out of nowhere: Covid hit. I was left completely alone; no resources, no support system, no friends, and no services providers with a good history of my children. I didn’t realize it then, but now I see that I put my head down and tried to endure the darkness and isolation. I thought “I know this, I have had amazing people prepare me to go it alone.”

After 5 years of growing more and more lonely and believing that I was ok, I finally found support. I found people who were living similar lives—working hard to help their children thrive—many of them wanting support too. I found out for the first time that my kids were eligible for Medicaid and Medicaid Waivers. I found the Special Olympics program; I found friends and resources for my kids; I found peace, joy and support for myself too.

What I have learned is that parents need support—and caregiving parents need it even more so. In those dark days when we believe we are alone and we tell others “we are fine,” we need each other. Here, you will find many different links to support systems, programs for yourself and your kids, ideas for snow days, tips for transitioning your child to adult care, etc. I want this to be a place where everyone can share and benefit.
